This young snowy owl is fierce! Check out more photos taken by Joel Sartore for The Biodiversity Project, which is documenting all the Earth’s creatures threatened with extinction.

This is an amazing project. Everyone should tour through the library of images. Problems are much easier to fix when we are forced to look at them.

Also, I want to caption like a hundred of these.

We all know that if we are measuring the pull of Earth’s gravity we measure it in Newtons! Grams measure mass (the amount of matter in an object). Pfft… what amateurs!!

jtotheizzoe:

What is a Gnome Doing at the Large Hadron Collider?

Meet Kern, the globe-traveling gnome. Here he is in one of the LHC’s tunnels. Why? Are gnomes the secret to unlocking neutrinos?

Kern is a project of Kern Precision Scales, a company that makes … you guessed it: Precision scales. See, gravity is slightly different at different places on the Earth’s surface, which is where lumpy-Earth maps like this come from. That means you’d weigh slightly more or less at different spots on Earth.

Kern the Gnome gets shipped all over the Earth where he is unpacked, weighed, photographed and finally sent to his next destination. He was heaviest at the South Pole, weighing 309.82 grams compared to Geneva’s 307.65 grams.

Follow Kern’s travels on his Tumblr, or track him on Twitter or the project blog.

(ᔥ Cocktail Party Physics)

did-you-kno:

In 1965, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson published a scientific study which proved that a radio signal with a wavelength of 7.3 cm was being emitted uniformly throughout all parts of the sky. This signal became known as cosmic microwave background
radiation. Penzias and Wilson won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1978 for their findings. It is believed that this cosmic static is comprised of photons of energy that are still cooling 15 billion years after the Big Bang.

Source

I think I was watching a lecture by Lawrence Krauss where he mentioned this awesome factoid - but, as I recall, he noted that it’s only around 1% of the static. Still cool, but good to get the facts straight.

Canada, you’ve done it again. If you’re a combination dino-freak/numismatist, then this is the coin for you.
It’s the best $30 25-cent piece that money can buy! Three more coins in this ancient creatures series will be released.
